Short Simple Trips

How many times do we sit down and think about the ridiculous amounts of gear that each of us carry to go fishing. Sunglasses, fifteen fly boxes, twelve spools of tippet, three spools of line per reel, nippers, backup nippers, leaders, indicators, and split shot all make the long list of supplies that we think we have to carry. Sometimes its nice to just bring it back to the very bare minimum.
Today was one of those days. After class I decided that a stop at the little lake by school would be worth a shot. The only things I could find in the back of my truck was my six weight, a reel of sinking line, and a single fly box. No nippers? No worries. I suppose that is what teeth are for. So onto my ten pound leader I threw on a very simple leech pattern with very few expectations on actually catching anything. Well the fish didn't seem to care what I had on as I had several nips at the fly that after ten or fifteen casts resulted in a little ten inch rainbow brought to the dock. Let the little guy go and left once the dock had some gear fisherman show up and stop me from getting some good casts in. Still, it was satisfying to finally catch a fish out of this little pond. Perhaps keeping it simple is the way to go sometimes. Keep it simple and tight lines!
